Welcome
This wiki is a resource for book suggestions, bibliographies, blogs, and websites related to International-Mindedness and Children's Literature.

This page was set up in connection with a presentation by Isabel Jones and Andrea Naylor for the
Hands on Literacy Conference in Singapore November 17, 2012.

The conference was organized through the International School Library Network of Singapore: http://silcsing.blogspot.sg/ and the presentation was called Teaching International-Mindedness Through Children's Literature. Isabel is the elementary teacher-librarian at the Canadian International School in Singapore and Andrea is the PYP coordinator at the same school.

International-Mindedness is about understanding the self in order to effectively connect with others.

Why use literature to teach international-mindedness?
Engaging children in a good book can lead to deep conversation about values and empathy and can contribute to students understanding the world from a different perspective. By experiencing a situation or place in a story, students may make connections to other cultures and life experiences.

Around the World in 80 books: http://www.squidoo.com/80Books
A fantastic blog by Keith Schoch. He includes many helpful links including his Teaching With Picture Books blog. I found his book recommendations on Universal Themes and Through the Eyes of the World particularly interesting. You will find many ideas here for teaching through literature. As well, he suggests two great resources for using the many wonderful books out there: Understanding Diversity Through Novels and Picture Books by Liz Knowles and Martha Smith and Across Cultures: A Guide to Multicultural Literature for Children by Kathy A. East and Rebecca L. Thomas.
